How to use an AI chatbot to save, organize, scale, and shop for recipes

You don't need another recipe app. The AI chatbot you already use (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, or similar) can clean up recipes, keep them organized, resize them for any crowd, and turn a week of meals into one grocery list. Here's how, with prompts you can copy and paste.

1. Save: turn any recipe into a clean card

Paste the recipe text (or a photo of a handwritten card, if your bot accepts images) and use this prompt:

Turn this into a clean recipe card. Use this exact format:
Title:
Servings:
Prep time / Cook time:
Ingredients: (one per line, with amounts in US units)
Steps: (numbered, short)
Tags: (cuisine, meal type, main ingredient, diet, time: under 30 min / 30-60 / over 60)
Notes:
Skip the life story and ads. If anything is unclear, list it under "Check:" instead of guessing.
[paste recipe here]

Copy the result into one place you control: a notes app, a Google Doc called "Recipe Box," or a spreadsheet. The bot's chat history is not a reliable filing cabinet.

2. Organize: tag once, find it fast

Keep every card in the same format so your tags work. When the box gets big, paste in a batch and ask:

Here are my recipe cards. Make a table of contents grouped by meal type, then by main ingredient. Add the time tag next to each title. Flag any duplicates or near-duplicates.

To find something later: "From my recipe box below, list the vegetarian dinners under 30 minutes."

3. Scale: resize for 2 or 20

Scale this recipe from [4] to [10] servings. Convert to sensible kitchen measures (no "2.37 cups"). Keep eggs as whole numbers and tell me how you rounded. Note any steps where pan size or cook time should change.

Baking is chemistry, so double-check scaled amounts for leavening (baking soda, yeast) and pan sizes before you commit a big batch.

4. Swap: adjust for diets and what's in the pantry

I'm out of [buttermilk] and cooking for someone who is [dairy-free]. Suggest 2 substitutions for this recipe and explain how each changes the taste or texture.

For serious allergies, always read the actual labels. A chatbot can be wrong about what's in a product.

5. Plan: a week of meals from your own box

Using only recipes from my box below, plan 5 dinners for [2 adults, 1 kid]. Reuse ingredients across meals to cut waste, put the quickest meals on [Tue and Thu], and keep one night for leftovers.

6. Shop: one grocery list, sorted by aisle

Make one combined grocery list for these recipes. Add up duplicate ingredients, group by store section (produce, meat, dairy, pantry, frozen), and leave off these items I already have: [salt, olive oil, rice].

Paste the list into your phone's notes or your store's app. Some bots can also make it a checklist.

Keep it simple

Once your bot is handling dinner, it can handle a lot more of your week: customer replies, reminders, listings, and invoice follow-ups. The free quiz below matches you with 3 jobs to try next.
